Lonnie Johnson In Arizona
Lonnie Johnson, one of the earliest and most influential guitar stars from the 1920's, came to Arizona in the fall of 1947 to play two weeks worth of shows in both Tucson and Phoenix.
Hank Williams In Arizona
Hank Williams, perhaps the greatest and most influential country singer of all time, came through twice in Arizona to play three shows during his all too brief life and career.
Charlie Christian In Arizona
I've reviewed the evidence and have come to the conclusion that Charlie Christian, the first true star of the electric guitar, did in fact perform in Arizona. He did so on a string of dates in 1940 as a member of Benny Goodman's band.
George Gillespie
Born in 1902 in Tennessee, George moved to Arizona at the age of 20 to cure a bad case of asthma. Within a few years he was working as a guide at Castle Hot Springs resort.
Sanford Clark
Sanford Clark's first single, "The Fool", written and produced by Lee Hazlewood, was the first big hit out of a Phoenix recording studio, cracking the Top 10 in 1956.
Rev. Louis Overstreet
The Reverend Louis Overstreet (1921-1980) was a singing and guitar playing preacher who, with his four sons, recorded some extremely powerful blues-inspired gospel music in Phoenix during the ‘60s.
